Charleston is being considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and would be the first US city to have that honor. The UNESCO World Heritage Site list is the highest possible recognition for a historic site which includes more than 1,000 sites in about 160 countries. Only 22 are found in the United States. Some of those include the Statue of Liberty, Independence Hall, Yosemite, and Grand Canyon.

This should be the same situation in Charleston with our strong preservation societies and regulations on historic buildings in the downtown area.
If Charleston does become a World Heritage Site, it will hopefully attract a high-value cultural visitor who supports local businesses and nonprofits and spends more money than a typical tourist from the region.
No other US city has gotten this prestigious distinction and Charleston hopes to be the first. Now is your chance to own an historic property right here in Charleston during this exciting process. Find out more at http://www.charlestonworldheritage.org/.
